Crowds
No crowd figures published
Best time
A Tuesday–Saturday daytime visit (the Missions Étrangères display is closed Sundays and Mondays in 2025)

Tip: Pair it with a stop at Le Bon Marché nearby as a calmer swap for the Haussmann store crush.

Why Reality is 81
  • Lives up to its fame 4/5. Paris Zigzag calls the Saint-François-Xavier crèche spectacular and says many consider it the most beautiful in Paris; no visitor reviews found. pariszigzag.fr
  • Value for money 5/5. The Missions Étrangères exhibition is entirely free, and both stops are in the 7th arrondissement. pariszigzag.fr
  • Can’t get it elsewhere 4/5. Over 75 nativity scenes from Asia, Africa and Europe, plus a Provençal village of more than 1,000 parishioner-donated santons, have no equal elsewhere in Paris. pariszigzag.fr
  • Easy to do 4/5. Walk-up and free, but the Missions display keeps short hours (Tue–Sat 10am–6pm, 5pm on 24 and 31 Dec, closed 25 Dec and 1 Jan). pariszigzag.fr

Cost

Best time
A weekday morning, booked online, combined with the 100 Presepi show a few minutes away

Tip: Pair it with, or swap it for, 100 Presepi by St Peter's: book online first, then ask the staff about the stones; it is at Via dei Cavalleggeri 5.

Why Reality is 81
  • Lives up to its fame 4/5. Rated 4.6 on Google (432 reviews) and 4.8 on Tripadvisor (69), with visitors praising the detail and the staff who explain it. wanderlog.com
  • Value for money 5/5. Free to enter, a short detour from the Vatican for a model with about 100 lit houses, 54 streets and aqueducts in marble from the colonnade. turismoroma.it

  • Easy to do 3/5. Online booking only, short morning hours and a hard-to-find depot entrance; reviewers say walk-ins are at staff discretion. wanderlog.com

Senso-ji's Edo-era year-end fair of hand-made decorated battledores, with a clapping ritual when one sells

Crowds
Stasher says crowds peak in the afternoon and early evening; mornings on the first or last day are calmer stasher.com
Best time
Morning of 17 or 19 December

Tip: Hang around a big stall: when an expensive board sells, the stallholders gather to clap hands in a special celebration.

Why Reality is 81
  • Lives up to its fame 4/5. A JapanTravel community writer found watching buyers haggle and sellers clap to seal a sale reason enough to go, and says December visitors should not miss it. pt.japantravel.com
  • Value for money 5/5. Free to browse inside a temple most visitors go to anyway; buying is optional. san-tatsu.jp

Blessing of the Bambinelli in St Peter's Square, Rome

Worth itReality 77Hype 35Underhyped · +42

Roman children hold up their crib's baby Jesus for the Pope to bless at the Sunday Angelus before Christmas.

When

Crowds
Thousands of children with their catechists in 2025 avvenire.it
Best time
In the square by 11:30 for the noon Angelus

Tip: A papal moment with no ticket hunt, unlike the Christmas Eve Mass: it is the Sunday Angelus just before Christmas, and the Vatican tree and 100 Presepi are in the same square.

Why Reality is 77
  • Lives up to its fame 3/5. Thousands of children raised their figurines in 2025, a tradition coordinated by the Centro Oratori Romani every year since 1969. avvenire.it
  • Value for money 5/5. No ticket mentioned, at the regular Sunday noon Angelus in the square. avvenire.it
  • Can’t get it elsewhere 5/5. A Roman tradition begun under Paul VI in 1969; nowhere else does a city's children bring their cribs' Jesus figures to the Pope. vaticannews.va

Setagaya Boro-ichi street market, Tokyo

Crowds
Setagaya City puts it at about 200,000 visitors a day; Time Out says the daikan mochi queue can top an hour city.setagaya.lg.jp
Best time
Soon after 9am on the first day, before the mochi queue builds

Tip: Take the Setagaya Line to Setagaya or Kamimachi station, bring a bag for your rubbish, and queue for daikan mochi first.

Why Reality is 76
  • Lives up to its fame 4/5. Time Out calls it one of the highlights of the neighbourhood's calendar, and a blogger who went recommends it for the rice cakes and one-off finds. timeout.com
  • Value for money 5/5. Free to enter; the Setagaya Line ride there cost ¥150 when the blogger wrote it up. notesofnomads.com
  • Can’t get it elsewhere 5/5. It dates from a free market Hojo Ujimasa founded in 1578 and still fills Boro-ichi Street round the old magistrate's house; nothing else in Tokyo is like it. city.setagaya.lg.jp
  • Easy to do 2/5. About 200,000 people a day, no parking and no bins, and Time Out says mochi queues of over an hour are not uncommon. city.setagaya.lg.jp

Cost
A normal subway fare ($2.90 in 2025) amny.com
Crowds
A blogger who rode in Dec 2024 found the train already packed by the second stop, with riders in period dress and Santa costumes pams-pictorama.com
Best time
Board at a terminal (2 Av–Houston or 96 St–2 Av) for the first departure of the day

Tip: Check the 6sqft or Transit Museum timetable: the train leaves 2 Av–Houston at 10, 12, 2 and 4 and 96 St at 11, 1, 3 and 5.

Why Reality is 81
  • Lives up to its fame 4/5. An Untapped Cities writer found the vintage cars noisier and bumpier than a normal train, with a musty smell, but said the ride was worth the wait. untappedcities.com
  • Value for money 5/5. It costs one ordinary subway fare. amny.com
  • Can’t get it elsewhere 5/5. Depression-era R1/9 cars running in regular service with period ads and incandescent bulbs can't be found anywhere else. 6sqft.com

Carol sing-along and Christmas story in the Concertgebouw's Main Hall on 24 December, with choirs, organ and brass

When
Thursday 24 Dec 2026, 20:00–22:20 iamsterdam.com
Cost
Tickets from €15 (in 2023 €10, children €5, plus a €5 fee per order) iamsterdam.com
Crowds
Unknown
Best time
Book once tickets go on sale; it is a single evening

Tip: Expect a Christmas Eve service with music rather than a pure concert: in 2023 a Dutch minister (dominee) took part, and the evening tells the Christmas story.

Why Reality is 72
  • Lives up to its fame 3/5. The 2023 edition put three choirs, a brass ensemble, piano and organ under conductor Benjamin Bakker in the Main Hall; no audience reviews were found, so this rests on the line-up. concertgebouw.nl
  • Value for money 5/5. From €15 for over two hours of Christmas music, song and reflections in the Concertgebouw. iamsterdam.com
  • Can’t get it elsewhere 4/5. Many churches hold Christmas Eve services, as Free Tours by Foot notes, but few let you sing carols in a hall of this standing. freetoursbyfoot.com
  • Easy to do 4/5. Seated and ticketed at a fixed time, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance, lift and hearing loop; the spoken parts may be in Dutch, which the listing does not state. iamsterdam.com

Best time

Tip: Put your name on the wait list for each of the three nights, since the seats only come back that way.

Why Reality is 69
  • Lives up to its fame 5/5. New York Times critic Zachary Woolfe wrote in 2023 that his Messiah pick has for years been Trinity's; Trinity says the Times called it the gold standard. ryanbrandau.com
  • Value for money 4/5. $35–110 plus fees is fair for a top period-instrument choir and orchestra, though the cheap seats are behind columns. gemsny.thundertix.com
  • Can’t get it elsewhere 4/5. Several Messiahs play in December (the New York Philharmonic's among them), but this is the one critics single out. ryanbrandau.com

Why Reality is 68

  • Value for money 5/5. Free to watch from the street, a single afternoon. vaticannews.va

Method

Where these come from: local newspapers and city magazines, local-language sites, and organisers’ own pages, not the big guides. We then checked every one against the same top “Christmas in [city]” guides we used for the famous list. Hype = 35 + 60 × the share of those guides that feature it, so an experience no guide mentions scores 35. Reality: the same four questions as every place on the site, with sources linked. “Lives up to its fame” only goes above 3 when someone who went backs it: reviews, or a critic or reporter who attended. Underhyped = Reality at least 10 above Hype, with Reality 60 or more. Local tips that didn’t clear that bar are still published on the city pages with their honest scores.
