Famous isn’t the same as worth it

Almost every famous attraction has 4.5 stars. That tells you it’s popular, not whether it deserves your money and your morning. The Hype Gap scores those two things separately, so you can see which famous places deliver and which ones mostly have good marketing.

What we do

For every place we publish two scores. Hype measures how big the expectation is, from review volume and star ratings. Reality measures whether it delivers: value for money, whether it lives up to the photos, whether you could get the same thing elsewhere, and how easy it is to actually do. The gap between them is the verdict. The full formula is public on How the Hype Gap works.

Each place page lists what it really costs, when to go, who it’s worth it for and who should skip it, with a source next to every fact. Visitors can vote, confirm or fix a price, and add tips right on the page, and once enough people who went have voted, their votes outweigh our starting score.

Ownership and funding

The Hype Gap is owned and published by KraftStories LLC. An experiential workshop company running hands-on craft studios in New York City and Honolulu. It is paid for by KraftStories. There are no investors, no sponsors and no advertisers.

  • No paid placements. No attraction, tour company or tourism board can pay for a verdict, a better score, a position in a list, or for a review to be hidden.
  • No commissions. Ticket and booking links go to official sites. We earn nothing when you click them.
  • Conflicts disclosed. KraftStories sells craft workshops, not attraction tickets, so it does not compete with anything we score. If that ever changes, we will say so on the affected page.

Part of a small family of local guides

The same team publishes two hand-checked local events guides. They share our approach: read the primary source, show the real price, and never sell a ranking.

How we keep it honest

Our editorial standards explain where facts come from, how we use software and AI tools, how we handle mistakes, and what we will never do. If you spot something wrong, tell us or use “Suggest a fix” on any fact. Corrections are made in the open.
