Christmas in New York City: what’s worth it and what’s overhyped
We scored New York City’s 12 best-known Christmas and New Year experiences the way we score every sight: how famous it is, and how good it really is for people who went. Clearly worth it: Dyker Heights Christmas Lights. And 5 underhyped ones the big guides miss, starting with Dickens's A Christmas Carol Manuscript at the Morgan.
Most overhyped: Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and Rink (-44), Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park (-28), Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes (-16). Famous, featured in nearly every Christmas guide, and the visit doesn’t match.
The famous ones, best first

Blocks of Brooklyn homes decked out with giant inflatables, nutcrackers, carols and tens of thousands of lights
When
28 Nov 2025 – 31 Dec 2025 (decorations go up the day after Thanksgiving); 2026 dates not announcedlast season’s dates, 2026 not announced yettimeout.com
Cost
Free to walk the public streets; A Slice of Brooklyn runs a 3.5-hour bus tour from Union Square (price not checked) shebuystravel.com
Crowds
Expect crowds on foot and slow-moving traffic around 11th–13th Avenues and 83rd–86th Streets shebuystravel.com
Best time
After dark on a weeknight in December
Tip: Take the subway and walk rather than drive; the traffic on the main blocks is the worst part.
Why Reality is 75
Lives up to its fame 4/5. Time Out describes elaborate, kitschy displays such as life-size reindeer, and Loving New York calls these the most beautifully decorated homes in the city. timeout.com
Value for money 4/5. Walking it is free; the cost is the long trip to south Brooklyn or a 3.5-hour paid bus tour from Manhattan. shebuystravel.com
Can’t get it elsewhere 5/5. Loving New York calls these the city's most beautifully decorated homes; a whole neighbourhood of private houses lit like this has no Midtown equivalent. loving-newyork.com
Easy to do 3/5. Far from Midtown, with crowds and crawling traffic on the busy blocks, though you can just turn up with no booking. shebuystravel.com

Expect to queue at the big department-store windows shebuystravel.com
Best time
Weeknight after dark, checking Saks showtimes first since the show doesn't run all night
Tip: Walk Fifth Avenue from Central Park south past the tree to Saks, then skip the plain stretches and head to Macy's at Herald Square.
Why Reality is 68
Lives up to its fame 3/5. The Saks show and a few showpieces (Bergdorf, Cartier, Saks) wow visitors, but one blogger notes most Fifth Avenue storefronts look fairly ordinary. happytowander.com
Value for money 5/5. Free, and Loving New York suggests seeing them on one walk down Fifth Avenue from Central Park, passing the Rockefeller tree. loving-newyork.com
Can’t get it elsewhere 4/5. Other cities do store windows, but the Saks facade show and the Bergdorf windows are a New York tradition with few real rivals. timeout.com
Easy to do 3/5. Walk-up and free, but the Saks show was abruptly cancelled in 2024, so check it is running before you plan around it. secretnyc.co

Crowds

Best time

Instead
Radio City's decorated exterior, with giant baubles and candy canes outside happytowander.com
Tip: Buy a seat further back for a November weekday: cheaper, and you see the full formations better than from the front rows.
Why Reality is 64
Lives up to its fame 4/5. The 2025 New York Theatre Guide review rates the classic numbers (Wooden Soldiers, the tap routine) highly and calls it a bucket-list show, but calls the new drones misfires. newyorktheatreguide.com
Value for money 3/5. A $50–55 November seat is fair for 90 minutes, but a post-Thanksgiving Saturday matinee ranged $100–599 for the same show. freetoursbyfoot.com
Can’t get it elsewhere 4/5. Nothing else in town puts the Rockettes' precision kickline on the stage of a nearly 6,000-seat hall. newyorktheatreguide.com
Easy to do 3/5. You need to book, and arriving later than half an hour before curtain can mean missing the first several numbers. freetoursbyfoot.com

Crowds

Instead
Union Square Holiday Market, whose stalls Lonely Planet calls very similar lonelyplanet.com
Tip: Book a skate slot before 10:30am, when skate aids are free and the ice is quietest.
Why Reality is 60
Lives up to its fame 4/5. Writers call it one of the prettiest markets in town, and Lonely Planet sends skaters here over Rockefeller, though browsing gets cramped at peak. shebuystravel.com
Value for money 4/5. Free entry at what the park calls NYC's largest free-admission rink, but rentals in peak slots reach about $64 and premium options go past $150. bryantpark.org
Can’t get it elsewhere 2/5. Lonely Planet says Union Square's stalls are very similar, sometimes the same, as Bryant Park's. lonelyplanet.com

Tip: See the tree around 5am or near midnight on a weekday, and skate at Bryant Park's free rink instead.
Why Reality is 51
Lives up to its fame 3/5. The tree itself impresses, but bloggers who went describe crowds bad enough to sour the mood and a rink that is smaller than it looks in photos. happytowander.com
Value for money 4/5. Seeing the tree is free; the score drops only because skating underneath it costs $50+ an hour with rentals. happytowander.com
Can’t get it elsewhere 3/5. It's the tree everyone pictures, but Lonely Planet sends skaters to Bryant Park instead and calls the NYSE tree the city's most underrated. lonelyplanet.com

Reality uses the same four questions as every place on the site: does it live up to its fame (35%), is it good value for the money and time (25%), can you get the same elsewhere (20%), and how easy is it to do, from queues to booking (20%). Each answer is based on what visitors and reporters say, with the source linked.
Hype is measured, not judged: it’s the share of the top 8 “Christmas in New York City” guides that feature the experience. Hype = 35 + 60 × that share. The rule was fixed before we scored anything. New Year’s Eve isn’t covered by Christmas guides, so its Hype isn’t scored yet. The underhyped picks were found in local press and on organisers’ pages, then checked against the same guides. “Lives up to its fame” only scores above 3 when someone who went (a reviewer, critic or reporter) backs it.
