Christmas in Tokyo: what’s worth it and what’s overhyped
We scored Tokyo’s 13 best-known Christmas and New Year experiences the way we score every sight: how famous it is, and how good it really is for people who went. Clearly worth it: Marunouchi Illumination, Yebisu Garden Place Baccarat ETERNAL LIGHTS, Roppongi Hills Keyakizaka Illumination. Our advice is to skip Tokyo Christmas Market (Meiji Jingu Gaien and Shiba Park). And 3 underhyped ones the big guides miss, starting with Hagoita-ichi year-end market (Senso-ji, Asakusa).
Most overhyped: Midtown Christmas (Tokyo Midtown, Roppongi) (-28), Yomiuriland Jewellumination (-14), Tokyo Dome City Winter Illumination (Tokyo Snow Dome City) (-10). Famous, featured in nearly every Christmas guide, and the visit doesn’t match.

Reality uses the same four questions as every place on the site: does it live up to its fame (35%), is it good value for the money and time (25%), can you get the same elsewhere (20%), and how easy is it to do, from queues to booking (20%). Each answer is based on what visitors and reporters say, with the source linked.
Hype is measured, not judged: it’s the share of the top 8 “Christmas in Tokyo” guides that feature the experience. Hype = 35 + 60 × that share. The rule was fixed before we scored anything. New Year’s Eve isn’t covered by Christmas guides, so its Hype isn’t scored yet. The underhyped picks were found in local press and on organisers’ pages, then checked against the same guides. “Lives up to its fame” only scores above 3 when someone who went (a reviewer, critic or reporter) backs it.
