Christmas in Paris: what’s worth it and what’s overhyped
We scored Paris’s 13 best-known Christmas and New Year experiences the way we score every sight: how famous it is, and how good it really is for people who went. Clearly worth it: Galeries Lafayette tree and Boulevard Haussmann windows (Galeries Lafayette & Printemps). Our advice is to skip Tuileries Christmas Market (Marché de Noël des Tuileries). And 4 underhyped ones the big guides miss, starting with Christmas crèches of the 7th: Crèches du Monde (Missions Étrangères) and Saint-François-Xavier.
Most overhyped: Tuileries Christmas Market (Marché de Noël des Tuileries) (-58), Champs-Élysées Christmas lights (-20), Grand Palais des Glaces (Grand Palais ice rink) (-20). Famous, featured in nearly every Christmas guide, and the visit doesn’t match.

Lives up to its fame 4/5. A guide writer calls it a showstopping tree and a must-do; the design changes every year, with Castelbajac designing 2026's. happytowander.com

A local blogger says weekdays before 5pm are noticeably less crowded worldinparis.com
Best time
Weekday afternoon before 5pm, combined with a booked cathedral slot

Value for money 4/5. Browsing and the cathedral itself cost nothing; only food and gifts are paid. worldinparis.com
Can’t get it elsewhere 3/5. The stalls sell French crafts like other small markets; the setting by the cathedral, best seen from the towers after dark, is the draw. worldinparis.com

Tip: Book the morning slot online as soon as you know your dates: it's the cheapest and least crowded.
Why Reality is 53
Lives up to its fame 4/5. Skating under the renovated glass roof is the draw, and evenings add DJ sets and light shows, so it is an event rink rather than a quiet skate. france.fr

Hype not scored yet: Christmas guides rarely cover New Year’s Eve, so we’ll measure it against New Year’s Eve guides instead.
Reality uses the same four questions as every place on the site: does it live up to its fame (35%), is it good value for the money and time (25%), can you get the same elsewhere (20%), and how easy is it to do, from queues to booking (20%). Each answer is based on what visitors and reporters say, with the source linked.
Hype is measured, not judged: it’s the share of the top 8 “Christmas in Paris” guides that feature the experience. Hype = 35 + 60 × that share. The rule was fixed before we scored anything. New Year’s Eve isn’t covered by Christmas guides, so its Hype isn’t scored yet. The underhyped picks were found in local press and on organisers’ pages, then checked against the same guides. “Lives up to its fame” only scores above 3 when someone who went (a reviewer, critic or reporter) backs it.
