The rules that catch people out

🎟️Booking4
  • Full ticket is EUR 20.00 at the door. Booked online it is EUR 20.00 plus a EUR 5.00 'Skip the Line' supplement, so EUR 25.00. Reduced is EUR 10.00, or EUR 15.00 online. museivaticani.va
  • The only official online ticket site is tickets.museivaticani.va. The official prices page warns of scam sites with similar domains that may charge significantly higher prices. museivaticani.va
  • Tickets cannot be refunded. The ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel only on the day it is issued. The official page lists no change policy. museivaticani.va
  • Booking ahead matters. The Better Vacation says June-August morning slots sell out 2-3 weeks ahead every year; Art Visit Guide (October 2026) says summer slots go 3-4 weeks ahead and a few days is enough November-February. artvisitguide.com
👗On the day6
  • Dress code: sleeveless or low-cut clothes, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not allowed. Visible items or signs that may offend, such as some tattoos, also fall under the rule. museivaticani.va
  • In the Sistine Chapel you must keep absolute silence. Photos, video and mobile phones are forbidden there, and guards can make you delete photos. Elsewhere, personal photos are allowed, but flash and selfie sticks are banned, and tripods or professional kit need authorisation. museivaticani.va
  • Rucksacks, suitcases, large bags, medium and large umbrellas, tripods, knives and metal tools must go in the cloakroom. The cloakroom is free. If you are going on to St Peter's Basilica, the official advice is not to leave bags in the Museums. museivaticani.va
  • Cloakroom items are collected in the exit hall, at the foot of the Momo spiral staircase. museivaticani.va
  • Food and drink are not allowed in the halls. There is no Wi-Fi anywhere in the Museums, and air conditioning is limited in some busy rooms in summer. museivaticani.va
  • The Roman Guy says you cannot re-enter the Museums once you exit. The official pages we read do not say. theromanguy.com
💶Reduced, free and free Sundays4
  • The last Sunday of the month is free, 09:00-14:00, final entry 12:30. It does not apply when that Sunday is Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25, 26 or 31 December. Guided tours that day need a reservation. museivaticani.va
  • Reduced EUR 10 tickets: children 7-18; individual priests, religious, seminarians and novices (valid documentation); Holy See and Vatican City State employees, serving or retired, plus one companion (ID). museivaticani.va
  • Students up to and including 25 pay the reduced rate with a document from their school or university confirming enrolment for the current year. Anyone using a reduced ticket without entitlement must buy a full ticket, and the reduced ticket is cancelled without refund. museivaticani.va
  • Free entry: children under 7, ICOM and ICOMOS card holders, and visitors with a certified disability of at least 67% (plus a companion if not self-sufficient). Disability tickets cannot be booked online; they are issued at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk, and the visitor and companion get priority entry. museivaticani.va
🕘Hours and access4
  • Standard hours are Monday to Saturday 08:00-20:00, with final entry at 18:00. You must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing. museivaticani.va
  • The Museums are closed on Sundays, except the last Sunday of the month. Fixed closed days: 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, 8, 25 and 26 December. Check the 2026-2027 openings and closures calendar (PDF) before you go. The hours page also lists a one-off change: on 10 November 2026 all sectors stay closed 08:00-09:00. museivaticani.va
  • Audio guide: EUR 8.00, in 12 languages, collected at the entrance turnstiles in the Courtyard of the Cuirasses. The official page prefers you book it online with your ticket. museivaticani.va
  • Wheelchairs are lent free from the cloakroom, subject to availability, against ID and a deposit. The Museums publish a barrier-free route map. museivaticani.va
⛪St Peter’s and the shortcut3
  • The passage from the Sistine Chapel straight into St Peter's Basilica is described by tour sites as open only to guided groups. Independent visitors exit the Museums and walk round the walls to St Peter's Square, about 10-15 minutes. The official Museums pages we read do not mention the passage. walksofitaly.com
  • The Walks tour page for its Pristine Sistine tour (sold on devourtours.com) says the passage is closed on Wednesdays and may close for special celebrations, such as the Easter ceremonies. devourtours.com
  • St Peter's Basilica is not included in a standard Museums ticket. The Better Vacation says the basilica is free, with its own security queue. thebettervacation.com

Resellers, tours and touts

⚠️Before you buy from anyone else8
  • The official EUR 25 online ticket already skips the ticket queue. Resellers' 'skip the line' tickets do not skip security; Mama Loves Rome says airport-style security cannot be skipped. mamalovesrome.com
  • Lookalike sites are the main trap. vatican.museum is run by Culturae Heritage Services srls in Florence and says it is 'not affiliated with or endorsed by the Vatican Museums'; it quotes skip-the-line entry at EUR 28-35. vatican.museum
  • The Better Vacation names vaticanmuseums.com, vaticantickets.com and vatican-museum.org as non-official sellers charging EUR 35-60. The official site ends in .va. thebettervacation.com
  • The Vatican's own 2026 list of accredited tour operators runs to over 200 names, including GetYourGuide, Tiqets, Viator, Musement, City Wonders, Headout and Klook. museivaticani.va
  • GetYourGuide and Tiqets have their own allocations, so they often have tickets when the official site is sold out. Art Visit Guide quotes GetYourGuide's entry ticket at EUR 33 against the official EUR 25. artvisitguide.com
  • visitrome.com says guided skip-the-line tours cost roughly two to five times the base ticket, but elsewhere in the same article says two to three times. visitrome.com
  • Reseller tours often allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before; official tickets are non-refundable. Check each listing, since Art Visit Guide found two GetYourGuide options that were non-refundable. artvisitguide.com
  • Where Are Those Morgans lists overpaying for a ticket or tour sold outside the entrance as a mistake to avoid. wherearethosemorgans.com

Questions people ask

Are the Vatican Museums worth it?

For most first-timers, yes: the Sistine Chapel, Raphael Rooms and Pio-Clementino are unique. Go early or late and book a timed ticket, because the crowds are the main complaint. The Morgans say skip it if you don't care for art or history, since the crowds will frustrate you. wherearethosemorgans.com

How long do you need?

About 2-3 hours for the highlights (Pio-Clementino, Gallery of Maps, Raphael Rooms, Sistine Chapel). Allow 4-5 hours if you add the Pinacoteca and the Egyptian collection. getromantours.com

How far ahead should I book?

In summer, 3-4 weeks ahead for morning slots; a few days is usually enough November-February. If the official shop shows sold out, check again early in the morning, Rome time, when cancellations come back. artvisitguide.com

What is the best time to go?

The first slot (08:00) or late afternoon. Tuesday and Thursday are usually quietest; Mondays are busy after the Sunday closure, and 09:00-12:00 is the peak. walksofitaly.com

Is the free last Sunday worth it?

Only if saving EUR 20-25 matters more than comfort. It runs 09:00-14:00 with final entry at 12:30, queues start before dawn, and skip-the-line is not available. thebettervacation.com

Is a guided tour worth it?

For a first visit, a guide adds a lot: Untold Italy says the galleries are mostly unmarked, and the Sistine Chapel requires silence. The official tour costs EUR 40 including entry (about 2 hours), only EUR 15 more than the online ticket. tickets.museivaticani.va

Can I go straight from the Sistine Chapel to St Peter's?

Only with a guided group, according to tour sites. Independent visitors exit and walk round the walls to St Peter's Square, about 10-15 minutes. The passage is closed on Wednesdays and some event days. walksofitaly.com

What should I wear?

Cover shoulders and knees: no sleeveless or low-cut tops, no shorts above the knee, no miniskirts, no hats. museivaticani.va

Can I take photos?

Yes, for personal use and without flash in most of the Museums. No photos at all in the Sistine Chapel, where guards can make you delete them. museivaticani.va

Is St Peter's Basilica included?

No. The basilica has its own free entry and its own security queue. thebettervacation.com

What we couldn’t confirm9 details
  • Online fee: the official prices page shows a EUR 5.00 'Skip the Line' supplement (an official 2024 notice calls the EUR 5 booking fee optional), but The Better Vacation's May 2026 official-website article says there is no booking fee. Older third-party pages still quote about EUR 17 entry (vatican.museum) or EUR 19 (Rome Hacks, May 2026). The official page says EUR 20. romehacks.com
  • Hours: the official page now says 08:00-20:00, last entry 18:00. Several third-party guides still give 09:00-18:00, last entry 16:00 (visitrome.com, September 2026). visitrome.com
  • Friday or evening openings: the official hours page lists none. Art Visit Guide (October 2026) says the official site lists none for 2026. The Better Vacation (August 2026), Untold Italy and Where Are Those Morgans (Friday closing at 23:00, April-October) still describe evening openings. Treat evening tours as unconfirmed. artvisitguide.com
  • Booking window: Art Visit Guide and visitrome.com say tickets open 60 days ahead; Mama Loves Rome (September 2026) says in 2026 tickets were released from the start of the year for the whole year, with more added weekly. The official pages we read do not say. mamalovesrome.com
  • Timed-entry window and named tickets: The Better Vacation says a 30-minute window, no late entry and names matching ID. Not found on the official pages we read. thebettervacation.com
  • The Sistine-St Peter's passage: no official Museums page we read mentions it. Tour sites say guided groups only and closed on Wednesdays; the Morgans also say it is closed on Sundays when the Museums are shut. Its status on free Sundays is unknown. wherearethosemorgans.com
  • No official early-entry or 'Breakfast at the Vatican' product could be confirmed. Third-party breakfast tours exist, for example 1STicket's 07:30 tour with breakfast in the Cortile della Pigna, which its page showed as 'currently not for sale'. 1sticket.com
  • The 2026-2027 closures PDF could not be read date by date (no highlighting in text). Its fixed notes say the Gardens and the Via Triumphalis Necropolis always close on Sundays and public holidays. museivaticani.va
  • The official closed-days list gives no year. 6 April is Easter Monday in 2026; 2027 Easter dates are not on the page we read. museivaticani.va
