The rules that catch people out

🎟️Booking and names5
  • Online sales open 30 days before the visit date, and a timed slot is mandatory for Colosseum entry. Exceptions (per their own ticket pages): Full Experience Arena, Full Experience Passaggio di Commodo and the evening visits go on sale only 7 days before the visit. colosseo.it
  • All tickets carry the visitor's name and must be shown with an original photo ID at entry. Entry is refused if the names don't match. colosseo.it
  • Named tickets were introduced from 18 October 2023, and the number of tickets sold on site was doubled at the same time. A second ticket office opened at Largo della Salara / Via dei Fori Imperiali. wantedinrome.com
  • Name changes: allowed once, online, up to midnight on the seventh day before the visit, and only for a clear spelling error, a wrong reduction category within the same order, or a serious documented reason. This applies to visits from 9 May 2026. colosseo.it
  • No refunds, and no date or time changes, except when the site is closed by force majeure or by the authorities. A missed time slot loses the Colosseum entry with no refund. Lost tickets are not replaced. colosseo.it
🕘On the day4
  • Arrival tolerance: 24h ticket and Full Experience Arena, from 15 minutes before to 15 minutes after the slot. Full Experience Sotterranei e Arena, up to 30 minutes early and no lateness at all. Only Arena and Full Experience Attico, up to 15 minutes early and no lateness. colosseo.it
  • Maximum time inside the Colosseum: 75 minutes on 24h tickets, 90 minutes on Full Experience tickets. colosseo.it
  • Security: metal detectors and bag scanners at entry. Bags may be at most 30x40x15 cm, and there is no cloakroom or luggage storage. Banned items include backpacks, suitcases, glass bottles, selfie sticks, trekking poles, helmets, umbrellas over 1 m, spray cans, knives and multitools. colosseo.it
  • Mobile tickets: showing the purchase receipt on a smartphone is enough. Groups are capped at 25 including the guide, and groups of 9 or more must use whisper headsets. Group tickets aren't sold as a bundle. colosseo.it
💶Prices and free entry5
  • Purchase limits: at most 8 tickets per transaction at the ticket office, at most 3 purchases per day through authorised channels, and underground tickets capped at 8 per day per individual or intermediary, guide included. colosseo.it
  • Free entry: under-18s of any nationality on showing ID, and disabled visitors plus one companion. Free tickets must still be booked online. Under-12s must be with an adult holding a valid ticket. colosseo.it
  • Reduced fare: €2 for EU citizens from age 18 until their 25th birthday, on showing ID. This applies to the 24h, Only Arena, Forum Pass SUPER and all Full Experience tickets. The rule is based on age; no student card is needed. colosseo.it
  • Free days: the first Sunday of every month, plus 25 April, 2 June and 4 November (per colosseo.it's English opening-times page). On free first Sundays tickets can't be booked. They are handed out at the ticket office on a first-come basis and are valid only that day. colosseo.it
  • On free first Sundays the arena, underground, upper levels and panoramic lift are closed, as are the SUPER sites (official article from March 2022; check that this still applies). colosseo.it
📅Hours2
  • Winter hours from 25 Oct 2026 to 28 Feb 2027: 8:30 to 16:30, last entry 15:30. The Forum-Palatine opens at 9:00. Closed on 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. colosseo.it
  • Online booking is required for all areas. Ticket offices still sell on the day: the office closes 75 minutes before park closing, and per SiViaggia about 18% of all tickets are sold at the box office. The official pages do not say that winter is online-only. siviaggia.it
ℹ️Background and help3
  • Sell-outs in 2026: SiViaggia (April 2026) reports tickets going in minutes since mid-January 2026. It blames heavy buying by large operators, automated tools that hold tickets in carts, cyberattacks, and demand near daily capacity. siviaggia.it
  • Antitrust: on 8 April 2025 Italy's AGCM fined CoopCulture (official ticket seller 1997-2024) and six tour operators almost €20 million in total. CoopCulture's share was €7 million. The operators were Tiqets, GetYourGuide, Walks LLC, Italy With Family, City Wonders and Musement. The authority found that bots bulk-bought base-price tickets, which were then resold in pricier bundles. agi.it

Resellers, tours and touts

⚠️Before you buy from anyone else8
  • In April 2025 the antitrust authority fined CoopCulture and six resellers (Tiqets, GetYourGuide, Walks LLC, Italy With Family, City Wonders, Musement) almost €20 million. It found that bots bought up base-price tickets, which were then resold as pricier bundles with guides or 'skip-the-line' extras. agi.it
  • Wanted in Rome (April 2025) adds that resellers bundled unnecessary services and lacked transparent refund policies. wantedinrome.com
  • In 2026 resellers still charge tens of euros more than the €18 base, usually bundled with a guide or audio guide (SiViaggia, April 2026). siviaggia.it
  • Listed bundle prices in August-September 2026, from an affiliate site: about €21 for entry with an audio guide (+€3 over €18) up to about €135 for a special-access arena tour (+€117). visitrome.com
  • What is genuinely extra: a live guide and a separate group entrance. Arena and underground access are also sold officially at €24, so a reseller adds the guide and availability, not the access. Official underground tours are the cheapest guided option but come in limited languages. findingtheuniverse.com
  • Street scams: touts selling inflated tickets and fake 'gladiator' photos. A reader of Finding the Universe reports touts in blue 'skip the line' jackets giving misleading directions. Advice: go straight to the entrance with a ticket bought from an official channel. findingtheuniverse.com
  • Police have fined costumed centurions caught outside the Colosseo metro station (€400 each plus a 48-hour area ban) and illegal skip-the-line touts promoting tours outside the Colosseum (2019 report). wantedinrome.com
  • Evening visits are sold only on the official site (ticketing.colosseo.it), so anyone else selling the official evening visit is a reseller of a ticket that can't be legitimately transferred. colosseo.it

Questions people ask

Is the Colosseum underground worth it?

For most history-minded adults, yes, if you can get the official €24 ticket: it's only €6 over standard and you can't see the hypogeum any other way. Experienced writers rate it highly. A long-stay visitor found it interesting but not different enough to justify the price, so it's a nice-to-have, not essential. findingtheuniverse.com

Arena floor or standard ticket?

The 24h Only Arena ticket costs the same €18 as the standard one, but it gives about 20 minutes on the arena floor and no upper levels. First-timers are better off with the standard ticket, or the €24 Full Experience Arena if it's still available a week out. A writer who did the arena said it isn't a must-do. colosseo.it

Can I buy tickets at the gate?

Sometimes. Ticket offices sell same-day tickets, about 18% of all sales, until 75 minutes before closing, but it's first come, first served and there's no guarantee. Free first-Sunday tickets are only given out at the office. siviaggia.it

What if official tickets are sold out?

Check ticketing.colosseo.it daily for newly added or cancelled slots (Untold Italy). Try the Full Experience Arena (released 7 days ahead), try the box office on the day, use the Forum Pass SUPER for the Forum and Palatine, or book a guided tour, which costs more but usually has space because partner operators have their own allocations (Untold Italy). untolditaly.com

Do I need ID, and can someone else use my ticket?

Yes, you need original photo ID matching the name on the ticket, kids included. Tickets aren't transferable. The name can be corrected once, up to 7 days before the visit, and only for errors or serious documented reasons. colosseo.it

Is the Roma Pass worth it for the Colosseum?

Only if you're an adult paying full price and make the Colosseum your free first entry. You still have to book a slot and show the pass. Under-18s enter free and EU 18-24s pay €2, so the pass rarely helps them. colosseo.it

How long does a visit take?

The Colosseum itself is capped at 75 minutes (standard) or 90 minutes (Full Experience). Add 2-3 hours for the Forum and Palatine; 3-5 hours in total is realistic with security. findingtheuniverse.com

Can I get a refund or change my time?

No. Refunds are given only if the site is closed by force majeure or the authorities. You can't enter at a different time, and a missed slot loses the Colosseum entry. colosseo.it
