Parking & getting there

Driving is possible

Take a taxi if you can: the hides sit on unsignposted highway lay-bys with tiny free lots that fill on weekends. If driving, use the Flamingo Hide lay-by off the E66 or the small guarded Mangrove Hide lot off the E44 (Dubai-bound).

  • Mangrove Hide turnoff is off the westbound (Dubai-bound) E44 and poorly signposted; the Flamingo Hide lay-by is reached by keeping right onto the E66 around the inlet uaebirding.com
  • Mangrove Hide lot is tiny, guarded full-time and fills quickly on weekends uaebirding.com

Without a car: Taxi from Downtown Dubai (about 15 min); drivers generally know Mangrove Hide. No metro station nearby

Driving rules in Dubai

Driving in Dubai is easy and parking is plentiful and fairly cheap outside Downtown on event nights, but traffic jams, Salik tolls and slow mall car-park exits make the metro (Red/Green lines) plus taxis the better choice for central sights; rent a car only for day trips (Hatta, Abu Dhabi, the outer theme parks) or if you are staying out in the suburbs.

  • RTA / Parkin public paid parking (variable tariff). Street and open-lot public parking is paid via the Parkin or RTA app, SMS or meter; the zone code is on the sign. Since April 2025, premium spaces (mostly within ~500 m of metro stations and busy markets, codes ending in P, e.g. 'CP') cost AED 6/hour at peak (8-10am and 4-8pm) and standard spaces AED 4/hour at peak; off-peak (10am-4pm, 8-10pm) keeps the older lower rates (about AED 2/hour). Parking is generally free 10pm-8am and on Sundays and public holidays, but a growing number of zones (near some malls, mosques and residential areas) are charged 24 hours - always read the sign. Overstaying or not paying brings a fine (typically from AED 150). wam.ae
  • Event-zone parking. Public paid spaces in event zones (code X), starting around Dubai World Trade Centre, cost AED 25/hour while a major event is on. khaleejtimes.com
  • Salik road tolls. Salik toll gates (on Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Al Maktoum/Garhoud bridges, Business Bay crossing and others) charge AED 6 per crossing at weekday peak (6-10am and 4-8pm), AED 4 off-peak (10am-4pm, 8pm-1am) and on Sundays, and are free 1-6am. Rental cars pass the charge on to you, usually with an admin fee - ask your rental company. arabianbusiness.com
  • Mall parking (ticketless, plate-scanned). Big malls scan your plate instead of issuing tickets. Dubai Mall: free up to 4 hours on weekdays and 6 hours at weekends, then AED 20 for the next hour and steeply more (AED 60-200+), billed to the car's Salik account. Mall of the Emirates: free 4 hours Mon-Fri and all day Sat-Sun, AED 20 for hour 4-5, two extra free hours with Ski Dubai/VOX. City Centre Deira and BurJuman: first 3 hours free, free on Sundays. Unpaid Parkin-managed mall charges become a AED 150 fine after three days. gulfnews.com

Questions people ask

Is Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary open?

Is there an entry fee for Ras Al Khor?

No. Visiting the hides is free; individuals register on arrival, while tour groups and schools must pre-book with Dubai Municipality.

When is the best time to see flamingos at Ras Al Khor?

Flamingos are there year-round, but winter (October–March) brings the biggest numbers. Early morning or the late-afternoon ranger feeding at Flamingo Hide are best.

How do you get to the Ras Al Khor flamingo hide?

By taxi or car. The hides are reached from unsignposted lay-bys off the E44 and E66 highways; there is no metro station nearby.
